Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Attitudes and Beliefs on Classroom Control Inventory – ABCC was developed by N. K. Martin, Z. Yin, and B. Baldwin (1997). It is designed to measure Classroom Management Style. The scale is intended for use with Teachers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Instructional Management, People Management, Behavior Management.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Instructional Management | 1,2,5,6,7,8,10,11,14,18,21,22,24,26 | 14 |
| People Management | 3,4,9,12,15,17,23,25 | 8 |
| Behavior Management | 13,16,19,20 | 4 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Describes me not at all, 2 = Describes me somewhat, 3 = Describes me usually, 4 = Describes me very well.
The scale includes 10 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 26 to 104. Interpretation guidelines:
- Non-interventionist (Low Control): 26 – 51
- Interactionalist (Medium Control): 52 – 77
- Interventionist (High Control): 78 – 104
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Instructional Management alpha = 0.82, People Management alpha = 0.69, Behavior Management alpha = 0.69.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
