Scale Overview
The ENRICH Idealistic Distortion Scale (ENRICH-IDS) was developed by David H. Olson, David G. Fournier, & Joan M. Druckman (1985). It is designed to measure Idealistic Distortion. The scale is intended for use with Adults in romantic relationships or marriage.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly agree, 2 = Moderately agree, 3 = Neither agree nor disagree, 4 = Moderately disagree, 5 = Strongly disagree.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 14 to 70. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Idealistic Distortion (Realistic Relationship View): 14 – 32
- Moderate Idealistic Distortion: 33 – 51
- High Idealistic Distortion (Highly Idealized Relationship View): 52 – 70
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
