The Negative Partisanship Scale (NPS) was developed by Sabrina J. Mayer & Luana Russo (2024). It is designed to measure Negative Party Identity. The scale is intended for use with General adult population / voters.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Negative Partisanship: 1 – 3
- Moderate Negative Partisanship: 3 – 5
- High Negative Partisanship: 5 – 7

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Tested for reliability and validity.
Administration
