Scale Overview
The Bogardus Social Distance Scale (BSDS) was developed by Emory S. Bogardus (1925). It is designed to measure Social Distance / Prejudice. The scale is intended for use with General population.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Social Acceptance (High Social Distance): 0 – 2
- Moderate Social Acceptance (Moderate Social Distance): 3 – 5
- High Social Acceptance (Low Social Distance): 6 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High test-retest reliability (typically > 0.90).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
