The Dependence Proneness Scale – Form One (DPS-Form One) was developed by Ned A. Flanders, J. Paul Anderson, & Edmund J. Amidon (1961). It is designed to measure Dependence Proneness. The scale is intended for use with Children and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Agree, 0 = Disagree.
The scale includes 33 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 45. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Dependence Proneness (High Independence): 0 – 15
- Moderate Dependence Proneness: 16 – 30
- High Dependence Proneness (Needs more support and reassurance): 31 – 45
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.68.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
