The Acquiring Motives Questionnaire – AMQ was developed by Jonathan David, Miriam K. Forbes, & Melissa M. Norberg (2024). It is designed to measure Compulsive Buying Behavior. The scale is intended for use with Adults (18+).

Response anchors: 0 = Never, 1 = Rarely, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Frequently, 4 = Very Often.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Motivation: 0 – 1
- Moderate Motivation: 2 – 2
- High Motivation: 3 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of omega = 0.81 to 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
