Scale Overview
The Acceptance and Rejection Measure – ARM was developed by Amanda M. Pollitt, Jessica N. Fish, Ryan J. Watson (2023). It is designed to measure Family Acceptance and Rejection. The scale is intended for use with Sexual and Gender Minority Youth (Ages 13-17).

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Rarely, 3 = Sometimes, 4 = Often.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 4 to 16. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low level of behavior: 4 – 8
- Moderate level of behavior: 9 – 12
- High level of behavior: 13 – 16
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Family Rejection alpha = 0.88, Family Acceptance alpha = 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
