Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Belief-Aligned Collective Action Scale – BCA was developed by Carmen Cervone, Caterina Suitner, Luciana Carraro, Anne Maass (2023). It is designed to measure Collective Action. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Normative Activism, Non-normative Activism.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Normative Activism | 1,2,3,4,5,6 | 6 |
| Non-normative Activism | 7,8,9 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = surely not, 2 = unlikely, 3 = somewhat unlikely, 4 = undecided, 5 = somewhat likely, 6 = likely, 7 = surely.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 9 to 63. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low likelihood of collective action engagement: 9 – 27
- Moderate likelihood of collective action engagement: 28 – 45
- High likelihood of collective action engagement: 46 – 63
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Full Scale: α = .87, ω = .87; Normative Actions: α = .89, ω = .89; Non-normative Actions: α = .84, ω = .84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
