Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Blended Learning Course Experience Scale (BLCES) was developed by Bhagat, K. K., Cheng, C.-H., Koneru, I., Fook, F. S., & Chang, C.-Y. (2023). It is designed to measure Blended Learning Course Experience. The scale is intended for use with Undergraduate students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Course Design, Learning Experience, Personal Factors.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Course Design | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 | 9 |
| Learning Experience | 10,11,12,13,14,15,16 | 7 |
| Personal Factors | 17,18,19 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 19 to 95. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative Blended Learning Experience: 19 – 44
- Moderate Blended Learning Experience: 45 – 70
- Positive Blended Learning Experience: 71 – 95
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Overall Cronbach's alpha = .92 (Course Design = .95, Learning Experience = .92, Personal Factors = .71).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
