Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Boundary Work Tactics Measure – BWTM was developed by Kathrin Reinke, Lisa Niederkrome, Sandra Ohly (2023). It is designed to measure Boundary Work Tactics. The scale is intended for use with Adults (employed individuals, working students, civil servants, self-employed).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Preventive Tactics, Restrictive Tactics, Rejecting Tactics.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Preventive Tactics | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 | 7 |
| Restrictive Tactics | 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 | 9 |
| Rejecting Tactics | 17,18,19,20,21 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Rarely, 3 = Sometimes, 4 = Often, 5 = Always.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 21 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low boundary management activity: 21 – 50
- Moderate boundary management activity: 51 – 80
- High boundary management activity: 81 – 105
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha: .87 – .91.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
