The Commonly Experienced Health Care Barriers Index – CEHCBI was developed by Alannah Shelby Rivers, Keith Sanford, Morgan Brewington, Ashley Buchanan (2023). It is designed to measure Healthcare utilization barriers. The scale is intended for use with Adults (18 years and older).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = NOT true, 2 = a little true, 3 = moderately true, 4 = completely true.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 6 to 24. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low barriers: 6 – 12
- Moderate barriers: 13 – 18
- High barriers: 19 – 24
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Test-retest reliability: r = .83.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
