The Attitudes About Marriage Index – Aggression Scale (AMI-AS) was developed by Margolin, G., & Foo, L. (1992). It is designed to measure Attitudes condoning husband-to-wife aggression. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 25 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Unjustifiable, 1 = Somewhat Justifiable (1), 2 = Somewhat Justifiable (2), 3 = Somewhat Justifiable (3), 4 = Somewhat Justifiable (4), 5 = Justifiable (5), 6 = Justifiable (6).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 150. Interpretation guidelines:
- Strongly reject marital aggression: 0 – 25
- Low acceptance of marital aggression: 26 – 75
- Moderate acceptance of marital aggression: 76 – 125
- High acceptance of marital aggression: 126 – 150
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
