Scale Overview
The Parental Attitudes Toward Use of Aggression Scale – PATU was developed by Dodge, K. A., Pettit, G. S., & Bates, J. E. (1994). It is designed to measure Parental attitudes toward physical aggression. The scale is intended for use with Parents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Definitely disagree, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = Neutral, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = Definitely agree.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 10 to 70. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low acceptance of using aggression: 10 – 30
- Moderate acceptance of using aggression: 31 – 50
- High acceptance of using aggression: 51 – 70
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
