Scale Overview
The Individual Protective Factors Index – IPFI was developed by John Phillips, Fred Springer (1992). It is designed to measure Conflict resolution and adolescent resiliency. The scale is intended for use with Youth and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Self-Control, Cooperation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = YES!, 2 = yes, 3 = no, 4 = NO!.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 48. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low level of conflict resolution skills: 12 – 29
- High level of conflict resolution skills: 30 – 48
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
