Scale Overview
The Beliefs about Conflict – NYC Youth Violence Survey (BAC-NYCYVS) was developed by Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1993). It is designed to measure Beliefs about conflict and violence. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents (Grades 9-12).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Beliefs about Conflict Resolution, Perceived Familial Expectations, Safety and Weapons.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = No, 2 = Don't know, 3 = Yes.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 8 to 24. Interpretation guidelines:
- Adaptive conflict resolution beliefs: 8 – 13
- Moderate or mixed conflict resolution beliefs: 14 – 19
- Poor conflict resolution beliefs: 20 – 24
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
