Scale Overview
The Rochester Youth Development Study Depression Scale – RYDS-D was developed by Radloff, L.S. (adapted by Rochester Youth Development Study) (1977). It is designed to measure Depression. The scale is intended for use with Middle school age youth / adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Rarely or none of the time, 2 = Some or a little of the time, 3 = Occasionally or a moderate amount of time, 4 = Most or all of the time.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 14 to 56. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total Score Range (higher scores indicate more depressive symptoms): 14 – 56
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
