The Worry and Anxiety Questionnaire – WAQ was developed by Michel J. Dugas, Marc H. Freeston, Céline Doucet, Robert Ladouceur (2001). It is designed to measure Generalized Anxiety Disorder. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Excessive Worry, Worry Frequency, Worry Control, Somatic Symptoms, Interference.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all / Never / No difficulty, 2 = Mildly / Some days / Mild difficulty, 3 = Moderately / Half the days / Moderate difficulty, 4 = Severely / Most days / Severe difficulty, 5 = Totally / Everyday / Extreme difficulty / Very severely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 10 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low anxiety / Unlikely GAD: 10 – 25
- High anxiety / Possible GAD: 26 – 50
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
