The Children’s Coping Strategies Checklist – Revision 1 (CCSC-R1) was developed by Tim S. Ayers, Irwin N. Sandler, Stephen G. West, & Mark W. Roosa (1996). It is designed to measure Coping Strategies. The scale is intended for use with Children and adolescents (ages 8-13).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 54 items organized into 10 factors/subscales: Cognitive Decision Making, Direct Problem Solving, Seeking Understanding, Positive Cognitive Restructuring, Expressing Feelings, Distracting Actions, Avoidant Actions, Cognitive Avoidance, Problem Focused Support, Emotion Focused Support.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Often, 4 = Most of the time.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Strategy Use: 1 – 2
- Moderate Strategy Use: 2 – 3
- High Strategy Use: 3 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Active Coping alpha = 0.89, Distraction alpha = 0.80, Avoidance alpha = 0.73, Support Seeking alpha = 0.78.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
