The Emetophobia Questionnaire – EmetQ was developed by Mark J. Boschen & T. Riddell (2005). It is designed to measure Emetophobia severity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Somatic Sensations, Anxiety about Vomiting, Avoidance.

Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Unsure, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly Agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 21 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Mild Emetophobia: 21 – 42
- Moderate Emetophobia: 43 – 70
- Severe Emetophobia: 71 – 105

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Good internal consistency.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
