Scale Overview
The Friend Anti-Dieting Scale – FADS was developed by J. Kevin Thompson, H. Shroff, S. Herbozo, G. Cafri, J. Rodriguez, & M. Rodriguez (2006). It is designed to measure Peer influence against dieting. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Not much, 3 = Sometimes, 4 = Often, 5 = Very.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 5 to 25. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low anti-dieting influence: 5 – 11
- Moderate anti-dieting influence: 12 – 18
- High anti-dieting influence: 19 – 25
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
