Scale Overview
The Anti-Bisexual Experiences Scale – ABES was developed by Melanie E. Brewster & Bonnie Moradi (2010). It is designed to measure Perceived anti-bisexual prejudice. The scale is intended for use with Bisexual individuals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Sexual Orientation Instability, Sexual Irresponsibility, Interpersonal Hostility.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Once in a while (less than 10% of the time), 3 = Sometimes (10%-25% of the time), 4 = A lot (26%-49% of the time), 5 = Most of the time (50%-70% of the time), 6 = Almost all of the time (more than 70% of the time).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 6. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low frequency of anti-bisexual experiences: 1 – 2
- Moderate frequency of anti-bisexual experiences: 3 – 4
- High frequency of anti-bisexual experiences: 5 – 6
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total scale alpha: 0.95; Subscales: 0.88 – 0.95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
