Scale Overview
The International Prostate Symptom Score – IPSS was developed by American Urological Association (1992). It is designed to measure Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The scale is intended for use with Adult males.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not at all / None, 1 = Less than 1 in 5 times / 1 time, 2 = Less than half the time / 2 times, 3 = About half the time / 3 times, 4 = More than half the time / 4 times, 5 = Almost always / 5 or more times.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Mild: 0 – 7
- Moderate: 8 – 19
- Severe: 20 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.86.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
