Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Schedule of Sexist Events – SSE was developed by Elizabeth A. Klonoff, Hope Landrine (1995). It is designed to measure Sexist discrimination. The scale is intended for use with Women.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Sexist Degradation, Sexist Discrimination, Sexist Relations, Global Impact.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Sexist Degradation | 11,12,13,14,16,17,18,19 | 8 |
| Sexist Discrimination | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,9 | 8 |
| Sexist Relations | 8,10,15 | 3 |
| Global Impact | 20 | 1 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never happened, 2 = Happened once in a while (<10% of the time), 3 = Happened sometimes (10-25% of the time), 4 = Happened a lot (26-49% of the time), 5 = Happened most of the time (50-70% of the time), 6 = Happened almost all of the time (more than 70% of the time).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 20 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low exposure to sexist events: 20 – 50
- Moderate exposure to sexist events: 51 – 85
- High exposure to sexist events: 86 – 120
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
