Scale Overview
The Sexual Relationship Power Scale – SRPS was developed by J. Pulerwitz, S. Gortmaker, & W. DeJong (2000). It is designed to measure Sexual Relationship Power. The scale is intended for use with Adults in intimate relationships.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 23 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Relationship Control, Decision-Making Dominance.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree (Items 1-15) / Your Partner (Items 16-23), 2 = Agree (Items 1-15) / Both of You Equally (Items 16-23), 3 = Disagree (Items 1-15) / You (Items 16-23), 4 = Strongly Disagree (Items 1-15).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Relationship Power: 1 – 2
- Medium Relationship Power: 2 – 3
- High Relationship Power: 3 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
