Scale Overview
The Dutch Work Addiction Scale – DUWAS-10 was developed by Wilmar B. Schaufeli, Akihito Shimazu, & Toon W. Taris (2009). It is designed to measure Workaholism. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Working Excessively, Working Compulsively.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = (Almost) never, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Often, 4 = (Almost) always.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 10 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low risk of work addiction: 10 – 20
- Moderate risk of work addiction: 21 – 30
- High risk of work addiction: 31 – 40
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.75 – 0.85.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
