Job Demand Control Measure
Measures dimensions of work control, cognitive demand, and production responsibility.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Job Demand Control Measure was developed by Jackson, P. R., Wall, T. D., Martin, R., & Davids, K. (1993). It is designed to measure Job control, cognitive demand, and production responsibility. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Timing control, Method control, Monitoring demand, Problem solving, Production responsibility.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Timing control | 1,2,3,4 | 4 |
| Method control | 5,6,7,8,9 | 5 |
| Monitoring demand | 10,11,12,13 | 4 |
| Problem solving | 14,15,16 | 3 |
| Production responsibility | 17,18,19,20,21 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = A little, 3 = A moderate amount, 4 = Quite a lot, 5 = A great deal.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Timing control alpha = 0.85; Method control alpha = 0.77; Monitoring demand alpha = 0.73; Problem solving alpha = 0.50; Production responsibility alpha = 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
