Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Situational Goal Orientation Measure – SGOM was developed by Klimoski, R., & Boyle, P. (1995). It is designed to measure Situational Goal Orientation. The scale is intended for use with Adults, students, and organizational employees.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 9 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Learning goal orientation, Performance goal orientation.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Learning goal orientation | 1,2,3,4 | 4 |
| Performance goal orientation | 5,6,7,8,9 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 9 to 45. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low overall goal orientation: 9 – 21
- Moderate overall goal orientation: 22 – 33
- High overall goal orientation: 34 – 45
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
