Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Workplace Stressors Assessment Questionnaire (WSAQ) was developed by Mahmood, M.H., Coons, S.J., Guy, M.C., and Pelletier, K.R. (2010). It is designed to measure Workplace Stressors. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Demands, Control, Support, Role, Relationships, Rewards.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Demands | 1,2,3,4,5 | 5 |
| Control | 6,7,8,9,10,11 | 6 |

| Role | 15,16 | 2 |
| Relationships | 17,18 | 2 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree / Always, 2 = Agree / Often, 3 = Neutral / Sometimes, 4 = Disagree / Seldom, 5 = Strongly Disagree / Never.
The scale includes 15 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 22 to 110. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Workplace Stress: 22 – 50
- Moderate Workplace Stress: 51 – 80
- High Workplace Stress: 81 – 110
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Demands (0.84), Control (0.86), Support (0.77), Role (0.83), Relationships (0.74), Rewards (0.86), Total (0.95).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
