Measures the internal locus of control and responsibility that teachers assume for their students' academic successes and failures.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Responsibility for Student Achievement Questionnaire – RSA was developed by Thomas R. Guskey (1981). It is designed to measure Teacher Locus of Control. The scale is intended for use with Teachers.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Responsibility for Success (R+), Responsibility for Failure (R-).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Responsibility for Success (R+) | 1,3,5,6,7,10,13,15,18,19,21,22,23,26,27 | 15 |
| Responsibility for Failure (R-) | 2,4,8,9,11,12,14,16,17,20,24,25,28,29,30 | 15 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0-100% = Percentage of responsibility allocated to option A and option B (must sum to 100%).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Internal Responsibility (External Locus of Control): 0 – 49
- Moderate Internal Responsibility: 50 – 74
- High Internal Responsibility (Internal Locus of Control): 75 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients range from .70 to .82 for the subscales..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
