Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Teacher Efficacy Scale (Short Form) – TES-SF was developed by Wayne K. Hoy & Anita Woolfolk Hoy (1990). It is designed to measure Teacher Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Teachers and educators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Teaching Efficacy, Personal Efficacy.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Teaching Efficacy | 1,2,4,5,10 | 5 |
| Personal Efficacy | 3,6,7,8,9 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Moderately Agree, 3 = Agree slightly more than disagree, 4 = Disagree slightly more than agree, 5 = Moderately Disagree, 6 = Strongly Disagree.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 10 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Efficacy: 10 – 25
- Moderate Efficacy: 26 – 45
- High Efficacy: 46 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of N/A.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
