Scale Overview
The Self-Esteem Questionnaire – SEQ was developed by David L. DuBois, Robert D. Felner, Stephen Brand, Robert C. Phillips (1996). It is designed to measure Self-Esteem. The scale is intended for use with Early adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 42 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Peers, School, Family, Sports/Athletics, Body Image, Global Self-Esteem.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Peers | 1,7,13,19,25,30,35,39 | 8 |
| School | 2,8,14,20,26,31,36,40 | 8 |
| Family | 3,9,15,21,27,32,37,41 | 8 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 4-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 4 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 10 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 42 to 168. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Esteem: 42 – 84
- Moderate Self-Esteem: 85 – 126
- High Self-Esteem: 127 – 168
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha typically ranges from .70 to .90 for subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
