Scale Overview
The Quick Self-Description Form (QSDF) was developed by Andrew C. Butler, John E. Hokanson, & Heather A. Flynn (1994). It is designed to measure State Self-Esteem. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 31 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly align with left adjective, 11 = Neutral, 21 = Strongly align with right adjective.
The scale includes 12 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 21. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low State Self-Esteem: 1 – 9
- Moderate State Self-Esteem: 10 – 13
- High State Self-Esteem: 14 – 21
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (typically alpha > 0.90).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
