Regulatory Mode Questionnaire – RMQ
Measures individual differences in self-regulation modes, specifically locomotion (movement from state to state) and assessment (critical evaluation and comparison).
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Regulatory Mode Questionnaire – RMQ was developed by Arie W. Kruglanski, Erik P. Thompson, E. Tory Higgins, M. N. Atash, Antonio Pierro, James Y. Shah, Scott Spiegel (2000). It is designed to measure Self-Regulatory Modes (Locomotion and Assessment). The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Locomotion, Assessment, Lie.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Locomotion | 1,3,4,5,8,13,16,21,24,25,28,29 | 12 |
| Assessment | 2,6,7,9,10,11,15,19,20,22,27,30 | 12 |
| Lie | 12,14,17,18,23,26 | 6 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = strongly disagree, 2 = moderately disagree, 3 = slightly disagree, 4 = slightly agree, 5 = moderately agree, 6 = strongly agree.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 6. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low: 1 – 2
- Moderate: 3 – 4
- High: 5 – 6
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Locomotion: .80, Assessment: .79.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
