Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Self-Construal Scale – SCS was developed by Wei-hsuan Wang (2009). It is designed to measure Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal. The scale is intended for use with Adults and college students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 38 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: Autonomy, Direct Communication, Uniqueness, Competition, Relatedness, Sociability, Belonging, Harmony & Conformity.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Autonomy | 9,17,21,25,33 | 5 |
| Direct Communication | 3,11,19,27,35,37 | 6 |
| Uniqueness | 1,5,13,29 | 4 |
| Competition | 7,15,23,31 | 4 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Agreement / Low Expression of Dimension: 1 – 2
- Moderate / Neutral Expression of Dimension: 3 – 3
- High Agreement / High Expression of Dimension: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified in source text.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
