Scale Overview
The Asian Values Scale – AVS was developed by Bryan S. K. Kim, Donald R. Atkinson, and Paul H. Yang (1999). It is designed to measure Adherence to Asian cultural values. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Conformity to norms, Family recognition through achievement, Emotional self-control, Collectivism, Humility, Filial piety.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 18 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low adherence to Asian values: 1 – 3
- Moderate adherence to Asian values: 3 – 5
- High adherence to Asian values: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.81 – 0.82.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
