Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Family Problem-Solving Communication Index – FPSC was developed by Marilyn A. McCubbin, Hamilton I. McCubbin, & Anne I. Thompson (1988). It is designed to measure Family problem-solving communication. The scale is intended for use with Families (adults and adolescents).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Affirming Communication, Incendiary Communication.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Affirming Communication | 2,4,6,8,10 | 5 |
| Incendiary Communication | 1,3,5,7,9 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = False, 1 = Mostly false, 2 = Mostly true, 3 = True.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 15. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subscale Score Range (each subscale is scored from 0 to 15, with higher scores indicating higher levels of that communication style): 0 – 15
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
