Scale Overview
The Family Time and Routines Index – FTRI was developed by Hamilton I. McCubbin, Anne I. Thompson, & Marilyn A. McCubbin (1991). It is designed to measure Family routines and integration. The scale is intended for use with Families / Parents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 8 factors/subscales: Work Day and Leisure Time Routines, Parents’ Routines, Family Bedtime Routines, Family Meals, Extended Family Routine, Leaving and Coming Home, Family Disciplinary Routines, Family Chores.

Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 96. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Routine Integration: 0 – 32
- Moderate Routine Integration: 33 – 64
- High Routine Integration: 65 – 96
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.70 – 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
