Scale Overview
The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment – IPPA was developed by Gay C. Armsden & Mark T. Greenberg (1987). It is designed to measure Parent and Peer Attachment. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 50 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Parent Trust, Parent Communication, Parent Alienation, Peer Trust, Peer Communication, Peer Alienation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Almost Never or Never True, 2 = Not Very Often True, 3 = Sometimes True, 4 = Often True, 5 = Almost Always or Always True.
The scale includes 5 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 25 to 125. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Attachment Security: 25 – 58
- Moderate Attachment Security: 59 – 91
- High Attachment Security: 92 – 125
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Mother: 0.87, Father: 0.89, Peer: 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
