Scale Overview
The Parental Involvement Scale – Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS) was developed by Stern S. B., Smith C. A. (1995). It is designed to measure Parental Involvement. The scale is intended for use with Parents of adolescents/youth.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: General Shared Activities, Prosocial/Organized Activities.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never / Not at all involved, 2 = Seldom / A little involved, 3 = Sometimes / Somewhat involved, 4 = Often / Very involved.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Involvement: 1 – 2
- Moderate Involvement: 2 – 3
- High Involvement: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
