Scale Overview
The Body Image Questionnaire (BIQ) was developed by David Veale (2012). It is designed to measure Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) severity. The scale is intended for use with Adults, clinical populations, and cosmetic procedure candidates.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = 0, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 96. Interpretation guidelines:
- Higher scores reflect greater impairment and likelihood of a diagnosis of BDD: 0 – 96
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
