The Feedback on Physical Appearance Scale – FOPAS was developed by Stacey Tantleff-Dunn, J. Kevin Thompson, & Michael E. Dunn (1995). It is designed to measure Appearance-related feedback and commentary. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 26 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 26 to 130. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low frequency of appearance feedback: 26 – 60
- Moderate frequency of appearance feedback: 61 – 95
- High frequency of appearance feedback: 96 – 130
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
