Scale Overview
The Objectified Body Consciousness Scale – OBCS was developed by McKinley, N. M., & Hyde, J. S. (1996). It is designed to measure Objectified Body Consciousness. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Body surveillance, Body shame, Control beliefs.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Slightly Agree, 4 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 5 = Slightly Disagree, 6 = Disagree, 7 = Strongly Disagree.
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 8 to 56. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low level of the dimension: 8 – 24
- Moderate level of the dimension: 25 – 40
- High level of the dimension: 41 – 56
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
