Scale Overview
The Thinness Expectancy Questionnaire – TEQ was developed by Ari R. Steinberg, Michael Coovert, Mark Goldman, Judy Becker Bryant (2004). It is designed to measure Thinness Expectancies. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 76 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Positive Expectancies, Negative Expectancies.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Completely Disagree, 2 = Mostly Disagree, 3 = Slightly Disagree, 4 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 5 = Slightly Agree, 6 = Mostly Agree, 7 = Completely Agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 76 to 532. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Expectancy: 76 – 228
- Moderate Expectancy: 229 – 380
- High Expectancy: 381 – 532
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
