The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire – Revised (SATAQ-R) was developed by Cusumano, D. L., & Thompson, J. K. (1997). It is designed to measure Sociocultural influence on body image and appearance ideals. The scale is intended for use with Females (originally validated on college-aged women).

This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Internalization, Awareness.

Response Format

Total scores range from 21 to 105. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Sociocultural Influence: 21 – 48
- Moderate Sociocultural Influence: 49 – 77
- High Sociocultural Influence: 78 – 105

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Internalization alpha = .89, Awareness alpha = .83.
