Thinness and Restricting Inventory – TREI
Measures an individual's expectancies regarding the reinforcing consequences of thinness and food restriction.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Thinness and Restricting Inventory – TREI was developed by Ari R. Steinberg, Michael Coovert, Mark Goldman, Judy Becker Bryant (2004). It is designed to measure Thinness and restricting expectancies. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 44 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Thinness Expectancies, Restricting Expectancies.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Thinness Expectancies | 1,2,4,5,6,8,11,13,14,15,17,18,21,22,23,25,26,27,28,29,32,33,34,35,37,38,40,42,43,44 | 30 |
| Restricting Expectancies | 3,7,9,10,12,16,19,20,24,30,31,36,39,41 | 14 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Completely Disagree, 2 = Mostly Disagree, 3 = Slightly Disagree, 4 = Neither Agree Nor Disagree, 5 = Slightly Agree, 6 = Mostly Agree, 7 = Completely Agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 44 to 308. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Expectancies: 44 – 132
- Moderate Expectancies: 133 – 220
- High Expectancies: 221 – 308
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
