The Emotional Self-Efficacy Scale for Youth – ESES-Y was developed by Kirk, B.A., Schutte, N.S., Hine, D.W., Dacre Pool, L., & Qualter, P. (2014). It is designed to measure Emotional Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Youth / Adolescents.

This instrument consists of 27 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Using and Managing your own emotions, Identifying and Understanding your own emotions, Dealing with Emotions in Others, Perceiving Emotion through Facial Expressions and Body Language.

Response anchors: 1 = Not At All Confident, 2 = A Little Confident, 3 = Moderately Confident, 4 = Quite Confident, 5 = Very Confident.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 27 to 135. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Emotional Self-Efficacy: 27 – 63
- Moderate Emotional Self-Efficacy: 64 – 99
- High Emotional Self-Efficacy: 100 – 135

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Using and Managing your own emotions (alpha 0.88), Identifying and Understanding your own emotions (alpha 0.75), Dealing with emotions in others (alpha 0.85), and Perceiving emotion through facial expressions and body language (alpha 0.69).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
