Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Frequency of Forgetting Scale-10 (FOF-10) was developed by Zelinski, E. M., & Gilewski, M. J. (2004). It is designed to measure Memory Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults and older adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Always, 2 = Almost Always, 3 = Very Often, 4 = Often, 5 = Sometimes, 6 = Seldom, 7 = Never.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 10 to 70. Interpretation guidelines:
- Frequent forgetting (Severe memory concerns): 10 – 30
- Occasional forgetting (Moderate memory concerns): 31 – 50
- Infrequent forgetting (Minimal memory concerns): 51 – 70
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.83 – 0.89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
