Scale Overview
The Martin-Westie Intolerance of Ambiguity Scale – MWIAS was developed by Martin, J.G. and Westie, F.R. (1959). It is designed to measure Intolerance of Ambiguity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 8 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Undecided, 4 = Agree, 5 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 8 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Intolerance of Ambiguity (High Tolerance): 8 – 18
- Moderate Intolerance of Ambiguity: 19 – 29
- High Intolerance of Ambiguity: 30 – 40
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
