Scale Overview
The Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire – MEQ was developed by Horne JA, Östberg O (1976). It is designed to measure Circadian preference (Chronotype). The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 16 to 86. Interpretation guidelines:
- Definitely evening type: 16 – 30
- Moderately evening type: 31 – 41
- Neither type: 42 – 58
- Moderately morning type: 59 – 69
- Definitely morning type: 70 – 86
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.78 – 0.86.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
