Scale Overview
The Optimism Scale – NLSY97 was developed by Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor (1997). It is designed to measure Optimism. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents and young adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 4 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 2 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 4 to 16. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Optimism: 4 – 8
- Moderate Optimism: 9 – 12
- High Optimism: 13 – 16
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
